My husband and I recently took a trip to Strasbourg. While there, we went to the Musées de la Ville de Strasbourg. Strasbourg is a beautiful city. We’ve learned, while there that while Strasbourg is geographically (today, at least) is in France. In spite of this fact, most of the citizens of Strasbourg spoke German, and the older and traditional homes built in the city were traditionally German half-timbered houses. It wasn’t until France was unified and edicts where established that French was forced upon Strasbourg’s commoners. See French used to be just for the nobles in the area until this time.
I am a horrible archivist as I do not remember who painted these most interesting pieces. It could be the famous Italian fruit and vegetable painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, but alas I know not.
