Portland is famous for the record number of brewpubs within the city limits (metro area) making it the number one city for beer. In 2008 Oregon was ranked fourth in the country for per capita breweries (not just microbreweries). By 2010, the state had jumped to second place after Vermont, with a brewery for every 31,662 people. In fact there are 39 established and recognized brewpubs within the metro area.
- McMenamin’s (any of them really, but especially the Kennedy school)
- Hopworks
- Widmer
- The Tugboat
- Pyramid
- Rogue Brewery
- Mt Hood
Restaurants/Food Carts:
Food Carts…you are loved and oh so missed here in Europe. You would think we live in the center of Europe so we would have a plethora of food choices. Yeah, except we live in a little corner of Germany that happens to [only] do three cuisines really well: German, Italian and Turkish kabap. The rest that are attempted are really rather sad, plus we live in a rather small town. For more about Portland food carts you can click on the name in the title or look here or watch this video:
- My Fathers Place (MFP is just easier)
- Olé Olé (on Burnside!!)
- Genies
- Sushi Takahasi (*changed their name to Sushi Ichiban before we left but we don’t care – Takahasi is what we call it.)
- Koi Fusion
- The Hotcake House (it is actually called the Original Hotcake House, but we just say Hotcake House)
- The Tin Shed
Bars:
Portlanders love their bars, oh yes we do! In fact many of Portland bars are actually strip clubs (yes, some on this list are strip clubs too). Its hard to throw a stick in Portland without it in fact hitting a strip club. Due to Portland’s free speech laws, we have more strip clubs per capita than any other city in the nation (including Las Vegas).
- Kelly’s Olympian
- The Florida Room
- RonToms
- The Magic Garden
- The Yamhill
- Renner’s Grill
- Oak’s Bottom Public House
- The Limelight
- Yukon Tavern
- Henry’s Tavern
- The Know
Coffee Joints:
I make my own strong coffee at home generally, but sometimes it’s nice to get a cup while out. These are two of our favorite places to get a good strong quality cup of coffee:
- Stumptown (SE 42nd Avenue/Belmont Ave)
- Marsee Baking (Brian and crew, we miss you!)

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. I admit there are some things I haven’t experienced, but I am loving the list ANYWAYS. 🙂
